At SAFE, we’ve always believed that being a strong credit union means more than providing value to our members. It also means investing in the communities we call home and helping create opportunities for our neighbors to thrive.
For more than 85 years, SAFE has been proud to serve the Sacramento region. As we look toward the future, our proposed combination with BECU presents an opportunity to build on that legacy.
By combining with BECU, we will become the regional headquarters for the fourth-largest credit union in the country, bringing additional resources and capacity to accelerate growth and deepen our local investment.
SAFE and BECU share a long-standing commitment to supporting education, financial wellness, workforce development, affordable housing, and other initiatives that improve quality of life for local residents. BECU is deeply invested in community giving and together we’ll be able to increase support for local nonprofits and community building in the Sacramento area. That means:
- Committing an additional $1 million during the first year to support philanthropic initiatives across the Sacramento region. This will triple SAFE’s current annual community investment from approximately $445,000 to approximately $1.5 million each year.
- Maintaining SAFE’s valued partnerships, including our support of the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center and Performing Arts District.
- Expanding local initiatives, including our partnership with the A’s for the 2026 season.
The combination is supported by many organizations and individuals including local and state elected officials and community and business leaders throughout the region.
Michael Ault, Executive Director of the Downtown Partnership says “SAFE Credit Union has been an outstanding partner in downtown Sacramento, both through their community engagement, as well as helping support the venues and institutions that contribute to a vibrant city center. I'm pleased to see the organization continuing to grow while reaffirming its commitment to Sacramento. I look forward to continuing our partnership in the years to come.”
Increasing our philanthropic investment will bring more resources for nonprofits and community organizations working every day to make our region stronger. It will help expand programs, reach more families and young people, and create new opportunities for upward mobility throughout the Sacramento area. By increasing our philanthropic giving, we’ll have greater ability to respond to emerging community needs and support organizations that are creating meaningful, lasting impact.
Anna Rohrbough, Folsom City Councilmember, shared her support of the combination saying "SAFE Credit Union has been part of Folsom for decades, and I’ve appreciated the organization's commitment to our community. Having spent years in Washington state before moving to Folsom, I’m familiar with BECU’s strong reputation for community investment there, and this combination brings that same spirit to our region. I’m encouraged to see an investment in the future that keeps Folsom strong and creates new opportunities for our residents and businesses."
The combination will allow us to make a bigger difference in the places where our members, employees, and families live and work. Together, with BECU we can help strengthen organizations and initiatives that help uplift the Sacramento region and enhance the wellbeing of our local communities. As a member-owned credit union, your voice matters and we encourage all eligible members to vote on the proposed combination with BECU.
Thank you for being part of the SAFE family and for allowing us to serve this community. We look forward to continuing that work with the same local commitment you’ve always known backed by even greater resources for the future.
