At SAFE and BECU (Boeing Employees Credit Union), supporting the communities we serve has always been part of who we are. When SAFE members vote on the proposed combination with BECU, eligible voting members also have a unique opportunity to help direct a $250,000 contribution to four incredible nonprofit organizations making a meaningful difference throughout the Greater Sacramento region by getting to vote on where those funds go.
For more than 85 years, SAFE has invested in strengthening our communities. This initiative reflects SAFE's belief that community impact is strongest when members have a voice, helping determine how SAFE's charitable contribution supports organizations that are creating opportunity, stability, and hope for local families.
SAFE has selected four local nonprofit organizations as beneficiaries that align with our philanthropic pillars of financial literacy, affordable housing, youth and young adult education, and workforce development. Learn more about each organization below. Voting closes October 27, 2026.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area
Big Brothers Big Sisters creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that help young people reach their full potential. The organization carefully matches youth ages 8 to 21 with caring adult mentors who provide encouragement, guidance, and positive role modeling.
Many of the young people they serve face challenges such as poverty, trauma, foster care placement, or limited access to supportive adults. Through these life-changing relationships, young people build confidence, strengthen social-emotional skills, improve academic outcomes, and develop a stronger vision for their future.
Saint John's Program for Real Change
For more than 40 years, Saint John's Program for Real Change has helped women and children experiencing homelessness build the foundation for lasting stability and self-sufficiency.
As the largest residential program for women and children experiencing homelessness in the Greater Sacramento region, Saint John's provides around-the-clock support that includes safe shelter, nutritious meals, childcare, behavioral health services, employment training, career education, housing navigation, and family support services. Their comprehensive approach helps families break cycles of homelessness and build brighter futures.
Women's Empowerment
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Women's Empowerment helps women experiencing homelessness gain the skills, confidence, and resources needed to secure employment, establish healthy lifestyles, and regain stable housing for themselves and their children.
What began as a program built in partnership with women experiencing homelessness has grown into Sacramento's most comprehensive job-readiness program designed specifically for women facing housing instability. Since 2001, more than 2,000 women and 4,000 children have been impacted through Women's Empowerment's programs and services, including career development, paid job training, transitional housing, and ongoing graduate support.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento
For 40 years, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento has helped local families achieve stability through safe, affordable housing.
Working alongside volunteers, donors, businesses, and community partners, Habitat builds and repairs homes, revitalizes neighborhoods, and provides financial empowerment opportunities for families across Sacramento and Yolo counties. In the past year alone, the organization served more than 8,000 people through affordable homeownership programs, critical home repairs, neighborhood revitalization efforts, and financial education initiatives.
How Your Vote Makes a Difference
SAFE is contributing $250,000 to support these four local nonprofit organizations. While every organization will receive funding, eligible member votes will determine how the contribution is distributed.
The final allocation will be:
- 1st Place: $100,000
- 2nd Place: $75,000
- 3rd Place: $50,000
- 4th Place: $25,000
This member vote is another example of SAFE’s community commitment in action. By inviting eligible voting members to help direct SAFE's $250,000 charitable contribution, we're ensuring our community investment reflects the voices and priorities of the members we serve.
