Carve out some good times this Halloween season!

If you want to change things up from trick-or-treating in your favorite neighborhood, or you’d like to get into even more of the Halloween spirit, check out these fun and scary activities in the Greater Sacramento region to get you and your little ones excited about goblins and ghoulies!


Ghost Tours at the Sacramento History Museum

On Friday and Saturday nights between Oct. 13-28, you can embark on a special Ghost Tour at the Sacramento History Museum. But proceed with caution as this spooky experience is recommended for children ages 8 and up. Join the ghosts of early Sacramento on a mile-long guided walking tour departing from the Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento. This is a wonderful way to get spooked this Halloween season and learn more about this historic area’s fascinating past!

When: Oct. 13 through Oct. 28. Tours run every half hour from 6:30-9pm

Spookamotive Train Rides

For three weekends in October, you can hop on board California State Railroad Museum’s Spookmotive Train Rides! This is a delightful (and not frightful!) experience the whole family will enjoy, as you embark on a journey within the museum’s decorated diesel-powered trains. Each weekend features a special theme, which are as follows:

Oct. 14-15: Superheroes and Villains
Oct. 21-22: Pirates and Princesses
Oct. 28-29: Witches and Wizards

Sacramento Spooky Halloween River Cruise

Does your child like to wear their Halloween Costume all month? Or maybe they have more than one? For three weekends in October, Hornblower will be cruising along the Sacramento River with a fun, family-friendly Halloween River cruise. Spend one hour cruising along the Sacramento River as the evening creeps in with the chilling sounds of background Halloween-themed music. Take your family to the coloring area where spooky Halloween-themed coloring sheets will be available or stop and have your faces painted. As you disembark, all of the children on board will receive a fun Halloween party favor.

Spooktacular Halloween at Funderland

The festivities at this year’s Spooktacular Halloween at Funderland should not be missed, with a hay maze, magic shows, galactic character sightings, trick-or-treating at 15 candy stations, free crafts, and more! Receive free ride tickets by donating new games or art supplies for the River Oak Center for Children.

Boo at the Zoo

Enjoy trick-or-treating throughout the ENTIRE zoo at 15 different candy stations, face painting for kids, festive games, themed stage shows, magic shows with Trevor the Magician, keeper chats and even animal enrichments. Topo off a perfect day with a ride on the spooky zoo train or the creepy carousel for an additional fee.
